Even though he was a primary antagonist in seasons 2 and 3, I absolutely loved Dacre Montgomery as Billy Hargrove on Stranger Things. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Dacre Montgomery is the only person who can pull off a mullet.

Billy was pretty two dimensional when he was first introduced in the show’s second season. He was a bad boy with an attitude problem who blamed his stepsister Max (Sadie Sink) for the family’s relocation from California to Hawkins.

However, he was a more central character in season 3 and viewers learned more about his past. In the end, Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) access to his memories of his absent mother and abusive father is what saves the team from being killed by the Mind Flayer.

After breaking free from his possession, Billy Hargrove sacrificed himself to the monster to save Eleven.

Although it appeared as though Billy died in Max’s arms after the Mind Flayer attacked him, part of him could have been absorbed by the monster.

Is Billy trapped in the Upside Down?

Since Billy Hargrove was bitten by the Mind Flayer in the season 3 finale, there is a chance that part of him is trapped in the Upside Down. The show has demonstrated over and over again that the Upside Down holds immense power.

Even after Will was rescued from the alternate dimension, he was still connected to the Upside Down and its sinister inhabitants. It also seems that the Mind Flayer might have absorbed some of Eleven’s powers after biting her. Maybe Billy’s death furthered his connection to the Mind Flayer and he’s still alive somewhere.

You can rewatch the scene where Billy sacrifices himself to save Eleven below.

We will have to wait and see if Billy makes an appearance in season 4 of Stranger Things!
