Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s latest Riverdale season 5 teaser has fans wondering whether KJ Apa is leaving the show
Could Riverdale be preparing to say goodbye to Archie Andrews? That’s the pressing concern on the minds of fans after creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s latest tease on Twitter promoting the start of production on the show’s upcoming fifth season.
When Riverdale finally returns in 2021 with season 5, the show’s fifth season will kick off with what were originally intended to be the final episodes of season 4. In these first episodes, fans can look forward to seeing the teens of Riverdale enjoy the final milestones of senior year including senior prom and graduation.
After graduation, the series will look to jump forward several years allowing the writers to age up the characters, jump past college years and essentially start anew. However, could the upcoming season also feature the death of a beloved character?
Teasing the latest table reads of the season, Aguirre-Sacasa offered up a brief glimpse of what will be the third and fourth episodes of the season. While episode 3 teases graduation with a comic featuring Jughead, Veronica, Archie, Betty and Reggie, the corresponding comic for episode 4 offers a graver glimpse into the future.
As seen in the title page, Jughead, Betty and Veronica are seen somberly standing side by side at a graveyard with a photo of Archie in an Army uniform above them. It seems to hint at Archie dying in combat and has us feeling quite concerned for our favorite red-headed heartthrob.

Riverdale season 5 cast: Is KJ Apa leaving Riverdale?
Considering the grave teaser from Aguirre-Sacasa, we can’t help but wonder whether Archie could be living on borrowed time which begs the question: is his portrayer KJ Apa leaving the show?
While the teaser from Aguirre-Sacasa doesn’t exactly have us feeling optimistic about what the future will hold for Archie, there has been no indication that Apa will be exiting the show.
Although the terms of the cast’s contract remain unclear, it’s believed the core “teen” cast members are all still under contract for Riverdale season 5. It’s also hard to picture Riverdale without Archie Andrews who has long been the glue keeping the show together and is by far one of the faces of the franchise.
So while Aguirre-Sacasa’s tweet might tease rough times ahead for Archie and the gang, there is currnetly no indication KJ Apa will be leaving the show.
Riverdale season 5 will premiere on The CW in 2021, arriving on Netflix following its finale.
