Perhaps one of the best bits of good news to arrive in the past six months came from Netflix when the streamer’s Strong Black Lead division announced that seven throwback Black sitcoms would finally be available to stream. Last month the complete series of Moesha and select seasons of The Game started streaming, paving the way for The Parkers, One on One, Half & Half, Sister Sister and Girlfriends to hit the platform in September and October.

From creator Mara Brock Akil, Girlfriends first premiered on UPN in 2000 before moving to The CW for its final two seasons. The sitcom stars Emmy nominee Tracee Ellis Ross, who leads an ensemble cast in the series about the lives and loves of a group of friends. In its eighth and final season, Girlfriends didn’t receive a proper ending, but its legacy, which included 172 episodes and a spin-off (The Game), lives on.

If you’ve never watched Girlfriends before, now is the perfect time to watch one of the funniest, longest-running, highest-rated Black sitcoms when the complete series starts streaming on Netflix on Sept. 11.
