What is 1BR on Netflix about?

Assuming you’re anything like me, a typical night at home for you includes scrolling through all the streaming services to find something that appears interesting. Netflix is my go-to, much like for many people, and so when I saw a recently added horror movie in the Top 10, I decided to go for it. That movie would be 1BR.

If you’ve seen the horror flick pop up in Netflix’s top titles and are wondering what it even is, here’s what it’s all about.

1BR cast

The movie stars Nicole Brydon Bloom as Sarah, Giles Matthey as Brian, Taylor Nichols as Jerry, Naomi Grossman as Janice, and Alan Blumenfeld as Sarah’s dad, among others.

What is the movie 1BR about?

Like your typical horror movie, 1BR follows a young woman (Sarah) who moves into a new place, alone, and makes a few honest mistakes that lead to some serious problems.

Here’s Netflix’s official synopsis of the film:

"Seeking her independence, a young woman movies to Los Angeles and settles into a cozy apartment complex with a disturbing sense of community."

What is 1BR rated?

The horror film is actually not rated. But given its scary and graphic content, I wouldn’t recommend showing it to any children.

1BR ending explained

The apartment complex Sarah moves into eventually reveals itself to be some type of cult, with the members trying to create a utopia. She seemingly gives in, and is even set to marry one, after their leader suggests she does so. But once Sarah discovers that the community might be controlled by an even bigger force, she makes an attempt to escape.

How does Sarah realize they’re not alone? She spots another apartment complex which also has a surveillance camera with a red light, and realizes they’re all being controlled by a company called C.D.E. Properties.

Once she sees this, she smiles, seemingly relieved that she does not actually have a place there, and decides to make a run for it.

It’s up for speculation whether or not Sarah is caught, but I for one am rooting for her!

Does the cat die in 1BR?

One scene in the film which viewers particularly have a problem with is when her cat is stolen and eventually killed. Though it’s not explicitly shown due to smoke, it’s assumed that her pet sadly passed away after Sarah is awoken to smoke alarms and something is burning in her oven.

The giveaway that it’s her cat? A note is placed on top of her oven which reminds her that the apartment complex has a strict no-pet policy. Ugh.

Is 1BR worth watching?

I personally would say it’s worth checking out 1BR on Netflix, especially if you’re bored one night with nothing to watch. Fair warning, though: Don’t expect it to be the best horror movie you’ve seen. It’s entertaining, but won’t blow your mind.
