I Am Not Okay With This canceled by Netflix: No plans for second season

It’s one and done for Netflix’s critically acclaimed dramedy I Am Not Okay With This. Despite a strong performance among viewers and critics alike, I Am Not Okay With This has been canceled at Netflix after just one season.

While many Netflix cancellations tend to stem from poor viewership or internal reasons which never come to light, that is not the case with the fresh coming-of-age series. Rather, the show has been canceled in connection to COVID-19 related reasons.

As reported by Deadline, Netflix has decided not to proceed with a second season of I Am Not Okay With This due to “uncertainty around production dates and balancing the availabilities of a large cast, coupled with unexpected budget increases due to COVID.”

Although Netflix has not formally greenlit season 2, Deadline reports the series was on track for renewal with several scripts already. Unfortunately, due to the uncertainties and hardships created by COVID-19, Netflix was forced to walk away from the promising project.

In addition to formally canceling I Am Not Okay With This, Netflix was also forced to reverse the second season pick-up of fellow teen-drama The Society. Addressing the decision in a statement to Deadline, Netflix had nothing but positive things to say about the creative teams behind both shows:

"“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” Netflix said in a statement to Deadline. “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators, including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.”"

At this time, it’s unlikely either series will be shopped around to other networks. It also is unclear what other Netflix Originals, if any, could be in danger of cancellation.

I Am Not Okay With This season 1 is currently available to stream on Netflix.
