With 3% season 4 arriving on Netflix tonight, are you tuning in for the final season of the Brazilian post-apocalyptic drama?

3% is one of the best shows on Netflix, and it returns for season 4 . The Brazilian drama has been applauded for its diverse cast, unpredictable stories, and biting political and class commentary.

3% is one of the first international dramas to be a hit for Netflix alongside the phenomenon that is Spain’s Money Heist. The show is filmed in Portuguese, and I will argue that it is much better with subtitles than with dubbing.

If you’re not familiar with the show, it is set in a post-apocalyptic Brazil where resources are scarce and only 3% of society is able to live in the utopian area that has been established offshore. A process has been established to determine who gets to live in this area that pits young men and women against each other in a series of mental and physical challenges the year of their 20th birthday.

For the most part, society has accepted that only 3% will earn their way offshore, but there is a resistance that is building to challenge the status quo.

The first two seasons revolve around the new classes that are to be competing to earn their way to The Offshore, but season 3 was far more contained. (Stop here to avoid spoilers).

In season 3, Michele (Bianca Comparato) has been allowed to build a 3rd area between the impoverished Inland and the prosperous Offshore. They call it “The Shell” and it is essentially a socialist/communist society where everyone contributes in their own way and there is initially no real class structure.

Between saboteurs from the outside and pressures from the inside that dynamic changes, and as resources begin to dwindle they end up holding their own version of The Process that they had successfully destroyed.

The show has always done a great job of speaking on society as a whole but with the first two seasons focusing on toppling elites and this one flipping to the elites making sure a socialist society can’t thrive, 3% has landed some heavy blows against our modern world dynamics.

The return of 3% is somewhat bittersweet as this season will be the last. Unless Netflix changes its mind and renews the show for season 4, of course!

On a positive note, knowing that this would be the final season means that the writers were able to tie up any loose ends and make sure that they tell the story they set out to tell. Here’s to 3% going out on a high note!
