Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot is in the works

Will Smith, Benny Medina, and Quincy Jones to reboot Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The latest series to get a reboot will be The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This 90s sitcom focused on a young man’s life after he moved from West Philadelphia to a gated community in Bel-Air, California, with his wealthy relatives.

Will Smith played himself in the original series, and the storyline was loosely based on the show’s producer, Benny Medina’s life. Although the series dealt with many issues that people face in reality, it was done in a comedic setting.

Smith starred alongside James Avery, Janet Hubert, Alfonso Ribeiro, Karyn Parsons, Tatyana M. Ali, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, and Ross Bagley. For many of these actors, including Smith, this show was a stepping stone to their careers.

Recently, Morgan Cooper made a fan film short showing the world what a dramatic retelling of Will’s story would look like. It is gritty and raw and wonderfully done. Take a look below.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot coming to Netflix?

According to Hollywood Reporter, soon after Cooper released his video, it caught Smith’s eye. They started working on the project and, Medina, Jones, and the original creator’s Andy & Susan Borowitz are all a part of the reboot. The series is being shopped out to the major streamers including Netflix, Peacock and HBO Max, in hopes that one of them will snatch it up.

Chris Collins (Sons of Anarchy), is also on board as showrunner and will co-write with Cooper.

Reboots are always in high demand but don’t always live up to the hype. But, with this many original players being involved, hopes are high for this series. It will be interesting to see how closely the reboot will follow the storyline from the original.

Currently, the original series is available to stream on HBO Max. So, until this series is ready for viewing, you can binge-watch the original for comparison.
