5 Netflix shows to watch this weekend, including Sugar Rush and more
The weekend is upon us again, and it’s time to figure out what you will watch. Netflix has many great choices, of course, whether it be great new movies and shows or old standbys you watch again and again.
Sometimes you need a good competition TV show to round out your viewing, and that’s what we are focusing on this week. Great choices in the genre include the traditional game shows like Jeopardy and Supermarket Sweep. Or the die-hard, survival skill types like Alone or Southern Survival. Another example is the obstacle course competition shows like Floor is Lava.
There is another sweet sub-genre to explore in the reality tv competition series. The reality baking series. Below we look at five baking competition series that could maybe inspire the cook or baker in you.
Netflix shows to watch this weekend: Aug. 8-9
Sugar Rush: Extra Sweet
July’s release of season three of Sugar Rush: Extra Sweet has been well received. It currently sits on Netflix’s Top ten list at No. 7.
Extra Sweet is the title of the third season of the Sugar Rush series. Sugar Rush is an American baking competition that features four teams of two that are professional bakers who compete for the $10,000 prize.
Alongside the professional chef judges, there are guest judges included in the judging panel. These guests include Colin Hanks, Richard Blais, Nick Lachey, and Vanessa Minnillo. Naya Rivera, who passed away, made her final TV appearance in Extra Sweet.
If you enjoy this series, don’t forget to check out Sugar Rush: Christmas for holiday-themed competitions.
Nailed It
Nailed It is in its fourth season and still going strong. Fans are hoping it will be renewed for a fifth season. Nailed It features amateur bakers competing for its $10,000 prize.
This series was inspired by the memes of the same name showing regular people’s failures at trying to recreate masterpiece recipes at home. In the series, the challenge is given to amateur bakers to create complicated recipes, and the results are often less than perfect. But that is the challenge. It wouldn’t be quite a challenge if they created simple recipes.
Nailed It also features celebrity judges such as Maya Rudolph, Adam Scott, and gymnast Gabby Douglas, as well as a special episode featuring the Fab Five of Queer Eye.
This series has inspired two holiday specials that you won’t’ want to miss.
Crazy Delicious
Next up is the British cooking competition Crazy Delicious. This series released in June of this year and features three contestants who will go three rounds to see who can impress the “Food Gods.”
The “Food Gods” consist of chefs Heston Blumenthal, Carla Hall, and Niklas Ekstedt. They are all dress in pristine white and are the judges of this contest. The contestants get their ingredients from a whimsical forest that would make Willy Wonka proud.
The three rounds have a theme, the first using a hero ingredient, the second is a reinvention of a classic, and the third round is something spectacular from the designated inspiration that could range from breakfast to barbecue.
It is a unique spin on a cooking competition show. Watch the trailer below.
Zumbo’s Just Desserts
This series is an Australian baking show called Zumbo’s Just Desserts. This series was developed by the same people who created My Kitchen Rules, an Australian cooking show.
Netflix came on during the second season of the show, and both seasons can be viewed on the streamer now.
In this series, aspiring bakers use their talents to impress chef Zumbo, who serves as a judge alongside Rachel Khoo. The two contestants who fail to impress must go on to compete in the “Zumbo Challenge” to avoid elimination. With a grand prize of $100,000, contestants are sure to bring their A-game.
There is no news of a season 3 at this time, but things could change.
The Great Britsh Baking Show
If baking shows are your thing, The Great British Baking Show is another one you can’t miss. This series is in its 10th season and going strong.
This show features amateur bakers in an ultimate baking battle. Each season focuses on the same group of contestants, with one being eliminated each episode. With three challenge levels, Signature Bake, Technical Bake, and Showstopper Bake, the competition forces the contestants to show off their greatest skills.
The judges are quirky and fun and know their stuff. Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith serve as the judges and are both highly skilled in culinary arts.
There are seven seasons of the show on Netflix.
It is an entertaining show, and you may learn some new baking techniques along the way.
