The first X-Men movie is finally coming to Disney Plus

It seems like forever ago when Disney acquired the rights to some of 20th Century Fox’s properties. Among those acquisitions was Marvel’s mutants. Everything from the X-Men teams down to Deadpool are now owned by Disney and Marvel Studios.

A lot of us look at this as if the X-Men are coming home. More than that, we get the crossovers we’ve been waiting for. Hulk vs Wolverine, Avengers vs X-Men, and Deadpool teaming up with multiple Avengers are just a few of the things we can’t to wait see.

An underrated part of this is getting all those movies to stream in one place. For example, the first X-Men movie. It’ll be coming to Disney Plus on Aug. 7.

If you stay up late tonight on Thursday, Aug. 6, you can watch X-Men as soon as it’s available to stream on Disney Plus, just after midnight PT.

You must have a Disney+ subscription to watch the movie.

This may not seem like a big deal, but it is. This was one of the first Marvel Comics movies to get the ball rolling and there was a lot riding on it. X-Men had to prove that comic book teams could work.

This isn’t like Blade where a solo character is the focal point. The X-Men have multiple characters with different personalities. That meant that you’d have to cast more people and hope that the recipe worked. Thankfully, it did. There were some bumps in the road. The, “Do you know what happens to a toad when it’s struck by lightning” is a perfect example.

Nonetheless, the entirety of the movie was aces. Had this movie failed, we may not have gotten the Avengers or Justice League.

Having X-Men among movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: The Winter Soldier just makes sense. You can witness how it all started, where Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine began. How this movie helped catapult Jackman’s name into the A-list category.

This was also one of the first times we saw Wolverine use his claws on more than doors and robots. Other than in the comic books, of course. Where Ian McKellen’s Magneto showed how a villain doesn’t have to be incredibly buff to be intimidating. He was calculated and powerful without needing six-pack abs. X-Men has to be among the best Marvel movies not just for its greatness, but for its faults as well.

As it was mentioned earlier, there was the toad and lightning line. Easily the most cringe-worthy moments in this film next to Halle Berry’s accent.

It doesn’t stop there. Maybe the most egregious part was the greatness we saw that wasn’t continued from James Marsden’s portrayal of Scott Summers (Cyclops). This movie gave us the Cyclops we needed. He was a leader, kind of stoic, and maintained the rivalry between him and Logan.

Then there’s Anna Paquin’s Rogue. She had the accent down pat and did everything she was scripted to do. However, that wasn’t the Rogue we needed or deserved. She was more of a plot piece than an actual character. We can look back at these examples and see the things we do and don’t want in the future.

In the end, Disney Plus is exactly where X-Men belongs. The special effects won’t won’t wow you like they did back in 2000, but the story and most of the acting is still solid.

This movie also has really good representation of Charles Xavier, Jean Grey, and (especially) Mystique. Rebecca Romijn doesn’t get the acknowledgment she deserves for playing Mystique. She’s among the shortlist of characters that had a perfect portrayal. The good thing about the X-Men coming to Disney Plus is that we’ll be able to see it first hand. When this movie pops up, go watch it. You’ll be glad you did.
