5 good movies to watch on Disney Plus
The Greatest Showman
Release date: Aug.14
Yes, it is a musical, but The Greatest Showman can even be appreciated by those who claim to be not so fond of musicals. The storyline is fantastic, and the casting is perfection.
Starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya, this story follows P.T. Barnam and the development of the greatest show on Earth.
The Greatest Showman is a brilliantly done musical that is highly entertaining and a must-see for those who love theatrics.
X-Men
Release date: Aug. 7
Who doesn’t love a great superhero flick? X-men, the first installment of the X-men series of films, will be steaming on Disney Plus this month.
This film stars many great actors, including Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Bruce Davison, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Ray Park, and Anna Paquin.
The X-men are a group of children born with genetic mutations led by Xavier (Stewart), who fight to protect the humans who fear them. They are up against a former colleague, Magneto (McKellen), who believes the mutants shouldn’t co-exist with humans.
It is a great film based on the comic book series of the same name.
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Release date: Aug. 14
Another superhero offering for August is Ant-Man and the Wasp. This movie is the sequel to the Ant-Man film.
In this film, Paul Rudd reprises his role as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, and he is joined by Evangeline Lilly, who plays Hope van Dyne/Wasp. Both of these characters are based on characters created by the late, great Stan Lee. The two are joined by Michael Peña, Walton Goggins, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Douglas.
In this second installment of Ant-Man, Lang is approached by van Dyne and Dr. Pym to once again done his Ant-Man persona and help fight alongside Wasp against a powerful new enemy.
Scott Lang is grappling with the consequences of his choices as both a superhero and a father. Approached by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), Lang must once again don the Ant-Man suit and fight alongside Wasp. The urgent mission soon leads to secret revelations from the past as the dynamic duo finds itself in an epic battle against a powerful new enemy.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Release date: Aug. 21
This live-action version of Beauty and the Beast was a fantastic rendition of a great story. A tale as old as time that has been beautifully brought to life.
The casting for this film was second to none featuring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson.
This telling follows Disney’s animated version very well with the addition of a few scenes. Anyone familiar with that animated version from 1991 will be pleasantly surprised at how well this live-action version does justice to the animated version we are all familiar with.
Alice Through the Looking Glass
Release date: Aug. 28
As with anything that involves Tim Burton, Alice Through the Looking Glass is a beautiful piece of cinematography. The visual effects are phenomenal, making this a great alternate story of Alice and her adventures.
Featuring another list of amazing actors, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska, Rhys Ifans, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, and Timothy Spall. And, music by the ever so talented Danny Elfman.
Although this film received mixed reviews, I feel it is a fantastical story of Alice and her gang.
