The countdown to Lucifer season 5, part 1 is officially nearing its end!

The first part of season 5 will arrive Friday, Aug. 21 with the release of the first half of the show’s 16-episode season. After months of endless speculation and rumors, Netflix finally provided fans with clarity about the show’s future when it confirmed the release date for Lucifer season 5 on June 22.

To say it’s been quite an interesting year for Lucifer fans would be an understatement.

Lucifer season 5 timeline: A history of how season 5 came to be

Nearly one year after FOX first canceled the seriesLucifer made its official Netflix debut with the release of the show’s 10-episode fourth season on May 8, 2019. Nearly one month after season 4’s release, Netflix announced it had renewed the show for what they promoted as a fifth and final season.

In the months that followed, fans rallied behind the show helping to make it one of Netflix’s most-watched and talked about programs, while launching petitions urging Netflix to reconsider its decision. Netflix was clearly listening and in February 2020 reports broke that Netflix and Warner Bros. were discussing the possibility of extending the series’ run with a sixth season.

Suddenly there was a glimpse of hope that the fan campaigning had paid off and all seemed to be moving in the right direction. Then the unthinkable happened: season 6 was put in jeopardy due to a contract dispute between Tom Ellis and the studios.

Talks seemed to hit a standstill. Months passed by with little to no updates on the status of the show’s future in sight.

Finally, after months of negotaitons, Tom Ellis officially inked a new deal to return for season 6 thus allowing the series to clear the final hurdle in its path. This allowed all parties involved to finalize things and eventually led to the series securing a sixth season on June 23, just one day after Netflix confirmed Lucifer season 5, part 1’s Aug. 22 release date.

At this time, it’s unclear when the second half of season 5 will drop on Netflix or when season 6 might make its way to the service. For now, we can look forward to enjoying Lucifer season 5, part 1 when it arrives in just a few weeks!
