Netflix has a great list of fantasy shows to watch this weekend, including the just-released Cursed.

The fantasy genre is so popular because of the vast variation the shows contain. Netflix has many offerings in fantasy and the sub-genres as well. Many of the offerings in the fantasy genre are Netflix originals.

It is always interesting to watch shows and movies with a fantasy theme and see all of the unique ways creators come up to explore this genre. They can push the boundaries that a regular series is unable to do. The creators can push things to the limits of their imaginations.

Three of the most popular shows on Netflix in the fantasy genre are Supernatural, The Witcher, and Vampire Diaries. All three of these shows are mega-popular and have a huge fan base. The popularity of these shows has encouraged the creation of many other shows that follow the fantasy theme.

Below we are going to look at some other fantasy shows now playing on Netflix.

Cursed

The newest released fantasy-themed series is Cursed. A Netflix original series that is a retelling of King Authur with great new twists.

The series stars Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) as a young sorceress, Nimue, who is thought to be the Lady of the Lake from the original story. She meets up with a young Authur (Devon Terrell) and is given the task of taking a sword to Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgard).

Cursed has been one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year for Netflix.

Merlin

This is another retelling of King Authur made for the whole family. Merlin, the series, came out in 2012 and ran for five seasons.

The series follows a young Merlin (Colin Morgan) and his friendship with a young Authur (Bradley James). Merlin, a servant to Authur, uses his skills to turn his friend into the great king and legend that we know.

This series does differ quite a bit from the familiar story. Magic is banned in the kingdom, so Merlin must keep his powers secret from everyone in Camelot. Instead of being an older advisor to Authur, they are close in age, and both of them must grow into the people they were meant to become.

Also starring John Hurt and Katie McGrath, this is a fun fantasy show for the whole family series.

Once Upon a Time

The series Once Upon a Time is a fantasy adventure series that initially aired on ABC for seven seasons. It was a fantastic twist on the story of Snow White and Prince Charming’s family.

The series was set in Storybrooke, Maine, and most of the characters lead duel lives as a resident of Storybrooke but also a character from fairy tale stories. They had long forgotten their fairy tale lives until someone unexpected arrives in their town, bringing to light their past lives.

Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, and Jared S. Gilmore to name on a few in this lengthy list of cast members.

The majority of the seasons have 22 episodes, so it is definitely a series that will take you some time to binge, but it is so worth it.

The Shannara Chronicles

Based on the fantasy novel trilogy by Terry Brooks, The Shannara Chronicles is another great fantasy series to check out on Netflix. This series consists of two seasons and has all the elements to make a great fantasy series.

Set in the fictional Four Lands, this series follows Wil, Amberle, and Eretria and their guide Allanon, who is the last druid. They are on a quest to ensure that the Ellcrys, ancient trees, do not die, which would release demons into their land.

Starring Austin Butler (Wil), Ivana Baquero (Eretria), Poppy Drayton (Amberle), and Manu Bennett (Allanon) as the main cast. Recurring roles are had by James Remar and John Rhys-Davies.

This is a family-friendly fantasy series that the whole family can enjoy.

The Letter for the King

The Netflix original series The Letter for the King is a coming of age fantasy series. This series is based on a novel by Dutch author Tonke Dragt from the 1960s entitled “De brief voor de Koning”.

This is a series that was released in March of 2020 and has been well received, and fans are curious to see if it will be renewed.

The story follows Tiuri (Amir Wilson) on his journey to get a letter into the hand of the king. He is joined by an unlikely group of young people who might not be equipped for this quest. They do have skills that, when brought together, may help them see the quest to completion.

Wilson is joined by Thaddea Graham, Gijs Blom, and Ruby Serkis, and Ruby’s father Andy Serkis does make an appearance as well.

The first season is six episodes long, so this can be a quick binge in the fantasy genre.
