Netflix preserves the original Unsolved Mysteries except for five differences

Fans of the original Unsolved Mysteries won’t be disappointed in the most recent version of the show, which has found a home on Netflix.

In many respects, this new release is still the same. After all, many of the people who were involved in the original series, including the original creators, are the masterminds behind this latest reboot at Netflix.

However, fans may notice several differences between the old show and the new show.

Below, we shared those five differences.

5 key differences between the original series and Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries

1. No Host

The most obvious difference is the lack of a host narrating each episode.

Robert Stack was the show’s longest-running –and most iconic– host, but as the show’s co-creator, Terry Dunn Meurer, told Entertainment Weekly, there isn’t anyone that can replace Stack.

True. So this version of Unsolved Mysteries will remain hostless.

What do you think about this change? Do you like it or would you prefer to have a narrator?

Sidenote: Robert Stack may not be hosting, but if you watch the intro closely, you’ll see he still makes an appearance of sorts.

2. Narrower Focus

The original Unsolved Mysteries contained multiple storylines in each episode, usually three or four.

The new version focuses solely on one unsolved mystery in each episode. That lets the producers present more information, including more first-person interviews and accounts. It also affords viewers a chance to learn more about each case, which may help turn up additional leads.

How do you feel about this change? Would you rather see more cases in one episode, or do you like delving deeper by focusing on a single case?

3. A Subtitled Episode

I admit I have not seen every episode of the original Unsolved Mysteries, but I’m fairly certain none of them contained an entire episode set in another country where the interviewees never spoke English and the whole episode was subtitled.

Fortunately for people who are subtitle-adverse, only one of the new Unsolved Mysteries episodes makes you read your way through it, “House of Terror.” It’s about a case in France where a family seemingly disappeared until a horrifying discovery was made. (No spoilers here in case you haven’t seen it yet.)

How do you feel about an entirely subtitled episode? Would you still stream it or skip it?

4. No Updates

Unlike the original Unsolved Mysteries, the new one doesn’t contain any updates.

So far.

Perhaps tips will come in that lead investigators somewhere, hopefully to cracking some of these cases and bringing closure to the families.

But will viewers get updates by way of the episodes?

The ones that are currently streaming don’t contain any, but perhaps the producers will piece together a special update episode. We’ll have to stay tuned.

Would you like to see updates to the cases?

5. More Heart

It may seem odd to end with this one after saying viewers may not get updates on episodes, but even with that difference, the new Unsolved Mysteries seems to have more heart than ever before.

Maybe because each episode focuses on only one case, they seem more intimate and personal. There’s more time to get to know the people whose loved ones have been murdered or are missing, and consequently whose lives have been irreparably turned upside down.

Yet, by sharing their stories, they may finally get some answers and peace. Which is why we need to update episodes, right?

There’s really no happy endings in these cases, because you can’t bring back dead family members or make up for lost time in the cases of those who have gone missing. But seeing those who caused harm brought to justice? There’s something satisfying in that, for both victims and viewers.

Have you watched the new version yet? Are there any differences between it and the original Unsolved Mysteries that you’ve noticed?
