Shadow and Bone release date, cast, trailer, synopsis and more

What you need to know about Shadow and Bone release date and more

One of the most anticipated new series coming to Netflix is Shadow and Bone, the upcoming show based on the bestselling Grishaverse series by Leigh Bardugo.

To say book Twitter was excited when the show was announced would be an understatement, and every time there has been some new information released, the excitement amps up another notch.

Many details about the show have been kept a secret, and that’s not really too surprising. This series is incredibly popular. According to Deadline, it’s sold over 2.5 million copies, and it’s bound to sell a lot more once more information comes out and once the show actually releases.

Netflix certainly wants to keep any details close to the vest to ensure the anticipation for the show is at its highest when it finally comes out.

Whether the series meets fans expectations remains to be seen, but based on book sales alone, a ton of people are going to watch this show and it’s almost guaranteed to be another hit book adaptation for Netflix

Shadow and Bone release date on Netflix

Shadow and Bone was suspected to be released on Netflix later this year. That’s what was reported when the series was announced. Likely, Netflix would have released the show around the holidays if everything went smoothly.

Unfortunately, things have not gone smoothly.

With the coronavirus pandemic, it’s looking more likely we’ll have to wait until 2021 to see the first season.

The show did finish principal photography in February 2020 before everything shut down, but post-production still needed to be done, according to Bardugo. Whether that can be finished during lockdown still remains to be seen.

Hopefully, the Netflix original series will come out sooner rather than later, so we all have something new to watch to make this pandemic and year a little more bearable.

If it’s not pushed back too much and post-production is done on time, we could see it before 2021. It’s all just a matter of getting post-production done and getting the show promoted and eventually released.

We’ll let you know more about the Shadow and Bone release date when we find out!

Shadow and Bone cast

One thing we can be sure about when it comes to season 1 of Shadow and Bone is the cast. Most of the main cast was announced earlier this year.

It includes Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkhov, Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, Simon Sears as Ivan, Danielle Galligan as Nina Zenik,  and Kit Young as Jesper Fahey. The cast list is finished off with Ben Barnes as General Kirigan, which Barnes has confirmed is actually The Darkling.

Some of the supporting cast will include Daisy Head as Genya Safin, Julian Kostic as Fedvor Kaminsky, Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar, and Sujaya Dasgupta as Zoya Nazyalensky.

While readers of the Grishaverse series may notice some characters are missing, either those characters haven’t been announced yet or they won’t be in the first season of the series. Not everything can be fit into eight episodes!

Shadow and Bone synopsis

While we don’t know much about what’s in store for Shadow and Bone season 1, we do have an official synopsis for the show and it looks like the first season will start right where the books do, via Netflix:

In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.

Not to give too many spoilers for those who haven’t read the books, but the young soldier is Alina Starkhov and her power is something the most powerful people in this world want to use. Whether for good or for bad depends on the person.

But she’s not doing this alone. She has her best friend, Malyen (Mal) Oretsev, by her side. Together, they will need to face the darkest powers before they can be free.

According to Young Hollywood, the series won’t just feature the story of Shadow and Bone; it will also include the story in Six of Crows, too. In that novel, a criminal prodigy, Kaz Brekker is “offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams.”

Seeing how these two worlds are entwined in one series will definitely be interesting.
