Netflix should save Katy Keene, the Riverdale spinoff, after it was canceled

Netflix needs to save Katy Keene!

Katy Keene was recently canceled after one season on The CW. Fortunately, the series is being shopped to other networks to continue the series, according to Deadline. And, that’s where Netflix could come in and save the day!

Katy Keene is a spinoff of sorts of Riverdale, one of the most popular CW shows right now. It’s surprising Katy Keene was canceled given Riverdale’s audience and their enthusiasm for more stories set in this world.

There’s already a petition going around for Netflix to save Katy Keene. It’s going to need a lot more signatures, but this is how these things often start.

To me, Katy Keene was one of the first victims of The CW and Netflix’s deal ending. For those who don’t know, The CW and Netflix had a deal that would send new seasons of Netflix shows eight days after the season finale aired. We’ve seen that deal, and deals like that, become the reason Riverdale, All American, and number of other shows became super popular.

Netflix simply has incredible reach, and a show like Katy Keene could use that reach.

Instead of heading to Netflix, Katy Keene was added to HBO Max, the new streaming service. Unfortunately, HBO Max just doesn’t have the reach that Netflix does, and it doesn’t have similar shows that could point viewers in the direction of Katy Keene.

If Katy Keene was on Netflix, the streaming network could point viewers in that direction as soon viewers finished new seasons of Riverdale or Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Once viewers watched one episode, they’d be hooked! Katy Keene has an incredible cast with Lucy Hale, Ashleigh Murray, Katherine LaNasa, Julia Chan, Jonny Beauchamp, Lucien Laviscount, Zane Holtz, and Camille Hyde. The foundation of the series and its premise are solid. Given time, it would be a hit at Netflix. I have no doubt about that.

But, will it be given an opportunity to thrive?

That’s the big question! The Deadline report states that Katy Keene, if it moves forward, is most likely to be picked up at HBO Max. It makes some sense to continue the series as an HBO Max original series, and if that happens, I’ll be very happy for the cast and crew who definitely deserve a second season and beyond.

I still think Netflix is the best place for this series, though. If HBO Max can’t figure out a way to make the numbers work and bring back Katy Keene for season 2, Netflix should definitely take a run at making this series a new Netflix original.

And, that’s for all the reasons listed above. Netflix has the biggest audience and platform to make this work. Netflix has Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, two shows that are also based on Archie Comics characters, like Katy Keene. There’s already a built-in fanbase at Netflix that HBO Max simply doesn’t have, and probably will never have for a show like this.

We’ll probably find out in the near future if Netflix or HBO Max is going to save Katy Keene. The Deadline report mentioned the cast options were extended until July 31, so a revival likely has to happen before that time. Stay tuned for more information!
