5 great movies to watch on HBO Max for the Fourth of July 2020

We shared a list of 5 good HBO Max movies to watch on Fourth of July weekend 2020!

Fourth of July weekend can be fun and filled with outdoor excitement. But after a long, hot day in the sun, sometimes it just feels nice to wind down with a movie that fits the feeling of the day.

Fortunately, with HBO Max still being a relatively new streaming service, there are lots of options that you may not have had previously. There are films that feel like summertime, demonstrate American ideals and take place all across the country.

So after you’ve spent the day barbecuing with friends and family, turn on one of these movies on HBO Max to continue your holiday spirit!

5 good HBO Max movies to watch

Jaws

Apart from Independence Day or Born on the Fourth of July, Jaws is probably the bonafide Independence Day movie. Even though it is about a shark terrorizing a small tourist beach town, it’s still a classic and one of Steven Spielberg’s best.

You get to experience the summertime feel with the sunny beach scenes, but also the excitement and expert filmmaking of Spielberg. Jaws is a cinematic classic, the first modern blockbuster and the perfect movie to watch in the middle of the summer.

North by Northwest

The quintessential Alfred Hitchcock film, North by Northwest blends murder, mystery and intrigue. Led by Cary Grant, the movie delves into an espionage thriller which travels from New York, to Chicago all the way to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

If you’re looking for a movie that showcases the diverse landscape of the United States while also diving into ideas about identity, directed by someone who is regarded as the greatest director of all time, North by Northwest is the perfect choice.

61*

Personally, one of my favorite aspects of summer is baseball. When I see a sunny, cloudless sky on a warm summer day, I’d love to be sitting and relaxing at a ballgame. 61* gives you that summertime baseball feeling while also exploring ideas about sports journalism.

As the film chronicles Yankees teammates Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris chasing the single-season home run record, you’ll have that baseball itch scratched, as well as a connection to characters and an excellent thought-provoking film.

Superman (1978)

Superman stands for truth, justice and the American way, so in the interest of creating a diverse list of films which all relate to the topic, 1978’s Superman is a fitting addition. While Man of Steel is also on HBO Max (and may be better the better movie), this film has a lightheartedness that Man of Steel lacks.

Superman will bring a kick of nostalgia while still being a great superhero film that has aged well in this golden age of comic book movies.

Saving Private Ryan

Yet another incredible Spielberg film, not much could feel more patriotic than watching the invasion of Normandy in World War II. Saving Private Ryan will put into perspective the kind of sacrifices that are made for even a single person in this country so we are able to celebrate holidays such as Independence Day.

It is regarded by many to be one of the greatest war movies ever made, but frankly, it is one of the best movies ever made.
