Is The Baby-Sitters Club coming back for season 2 on Netflix?
Will The Baby-Sitters Club be renewed for season 2 on Netflix?
The Baby-Sitters Club is one of Netflix’s newest book to TV adaptations, and it arrived on the streaming service this Friday, July 3.
Based on the popularity of the book series and 90s kids need for anything nostalgic, the show is almost guaranteed to be a hit.
It’s more surprising this is one of the first adaptations that’s been made. There was an adaptation on HBO in 1990 and a film in 1995 starring Rachel Leigh Cook and Larisa Oleynik, but neither did particularly well. Who puts The Baby-Sitters Club on HBO? No wonder it wasn’t on long.
But will this new series do well enough to get a second season? While Netflix loves to cancel a good series even after only one season, this one is probably safe. It’s pretty family-friendly and with most kids and adults at home due to the coronavirus or because of the July 4th weekend, there will be lots of people looking for something new to watch on Netflix, and this Netflix show caters to a big audience.
It’s still early days, but the reviews for the show have been glowing which may make a difference on whether the series gets another season or not. According to Variety, the show is “as warm as it is empathetic” and Vulture is saying the cast “are fantastic together — a believably middle-school-aged group of friends who are idealistic, loving, deeply feeling, occasionally annoying, sometimes mistaken kids.”
The best parts of the books are the fact that the author, Ann M. Martin, made them so relatable. They had great successes but they also made mistakes and had to deal with the consequences. None of their lives are perfect and that’s one of reasons the books were so popular and that seems to have been transferred to the show too.
There was also a character for everyone. Were you the bossy kid? Kristy was your girl. Were you the creative kid who was always working on an art project? Claudia was probably your fave. Were you a little boy-crazy? Stacey was definitely the one you liked. Or maybe you were shy like Mary-Anne? I could definitely relate to her more than the other characters.
Kids new to these stories will be able to relate to one of the characters just like we did when we originally read the books.
The modern update certainly won’t hurt either. A baby-sitter club is probably easier to manage when you can text and email and aren’t relying solely on a landline.
The new series clearly has a lot going for it and while the viewing numbers won’t be in for a while, it’d be very surprising if this didn’t get another season.
The show has so many things going for it: a great story, a great platform (Netflix) to be seen by millions, more story (with all those books), and a dedicated fanbase. That’s the recipe for a season 2 renewal at Netflix these days!
