Netflix shows and movies to watch in Summer 2020: Freedom Writers

Leaving July 31

With everything that has been happening in the world lately, there is nothing like watching a movie that is uplifting and inspiring. 2007’s Freedom Writers is a modern classic from MTV Films that captures the essence of life in inner city high schools. It can be hard to watch, but it also makes you think and that is a good thing.

The story revolves around a new teacher (Hilary Swank) who arrives at her new job to find that her class is full of kids from different backgrounds, and they’re at war with each other. Whether it’s race, class or gender, these kids have seen the other side. They live in Long Beach, in the middle of neighborhoods torn apart by gang violence.

In their world, you don’t get the option to opt out of being in a gang. She finds that the whole class knows people who have died from gang violence, so she sets about to free them from their pasts by giving them journals and encouraging them to document their stories. Though it’s hard for them to fully embrace their new lives because of their circumstances, these students appreciate the opportunity to be heard for the first time in their lives.

Freedom Writers leaves Netflix on July 31, so this summer is the perfect chance to gather the family and watch this powerful film together.
