Netflix shows and movies to watch in Summer 2020: Stand and Deliver

Available July 1

Before Freedom Writers, 1988’s Stand and Deliver was the movie that changed the way people saw education in underserved inner city areas. Edward James Olmos starred in the true story of math teacher Jaime Escalante, a man who transformed a class full of rebels and gangbangers into math geniuses.

Stand and Deliver was a poignant message about education and the way students in impoverished areas don’t have access to the same kinds of resources as students in affluent neighborhoods, and what’s more is that when students in underserved areas excel there are people who question their ability and accuse them of cheating.

Escalante was a man who fought for his students when everyone else accepted the status quo. He was someone who challenged his students to be the best versions of themselves that they could be, and in doing so he showed them that there are people who cared about them even though the system seemed to be rigged against them.

Stand and Deliver will inspire conversation between kids and their parents. It’s the kind of movie that will make you think while keeping you glued to the screen thanks to powerful performances from an all-star cast.
