You could probably recite the folk tale of Little Red Riding Hood start to finish from memory, but you might not have seen the story come to life as evocatively as in 2011’s romantic-horror Red Riding Hood. Amanda Seyfried stars as Valerie, a young girl who lives with her parents and older sister in the forest-side village of Daggerhorn. Valerie finds herself town between Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) and wealthy Henry (Max Irons), but plans to run away with Peter. When her sister’s killed by a werewolf, Valerie suspects the night-dwelling monster could be a loved one.

Red Riding Hood comes from director Catherine Hardwick, who also directed such movies as Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, Miss You Already, Miss Bala and, of course, the beloved cinematic treasure Twilight. The film struggled to make an impact both with critics, holding a meager 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences, grossing about $90 million worldwide. Regardless of the critical and commercial misfires, Red Riding Hood’s still a worthy watch almost 10 years later for its leading star and innovative take on the classic tale. Check it out at the top of July.
