The Last Kingdom season 5 might be in the works

Arselings, i’s time for another Shield Wall! The Last Kingdom season 5 may have quietly been renewed at Netflix.

And, if it wasn’t for former showrunner Stephen Butchard, we might not have even known about it.

During an interview with Netflix Life’s sister site, Winter is Coming, Butchard spoke of how The Last Kingdom season 5 would continue production slowly, which leads us to believe the series has been officially renewed. It just hasn’t been announced publicly yet.

Of course, until we get the official nod from either Netflix or The Last Kingdom, we can’t say the series has, absolutely, been renewed, but it is definitely a good sign.

We were hoping to hear by now if The Last Kingdom season 5 was a go or not. Netflix usually makes their renewal decisions roughly a month or two after the new season arrives, and season 4 arrived at the end of April.

The quiet is definitely concerning for fans. After all, there is definitely more story to tell. If you have read the books from Bernard Cornwell, we are roughly through six books out of the total 12 currently available. And, the thirteenth book is on the way this fall.

The Last Kingdom season 5 quiet renewal is similar to season 3

The good news is this has happened before with The Last Kingdom. Season 3 was not officially renewed until several months before the season 3 release date was announced. Fans went from May 2017 until August/September 2018 without knowing anything about the new season, unless you knew where exactly to look for production information.

While we all hope we don’t have to wait this length of time again for a renewal announcement, it’s not a huge concern if there is a long delay, especially with the words of Stephen Butchard to comfort us.

Fingers crossed we’ll be hearing from the streaming giants or the show itself very soon. Maybe they’ll hear about us talking about the quiet renewal and decide to make an official announcement. Now wouldn’t that be something?
