Warrior Nun, one of the new Netflix shows coming in July, looks awesome

Warrior Nun follows a teenage girl who has to save the world and join an order of demon-fighting nuns. It makes sense in context.

Out of all of the reasons to join a convent, 19-year-old Ava (Alba Baptista) definitely had the weirdest one. After dying and waking up with a divine artifact lodged in her back, she finds herself conscripted to join the Order of the Cruciform Sword to battle evil with a whole cohort of fellow warrior nuns, according to Netflix.

Why did the halo choose “non-believer” Ava? Who is that scientist that claims to have built a scientific portal to Heaven? How are the forces of Hell attempt to rise up on Earth?

All valid questions, but the trailer for the new Netflix show promises a slick action series that definitely gives you Buffy but older and more explicitly religious vibes.

Warrior Nun premieres on Netflix on July 2.

Warrior Nun Trailer

Either way between all the Gothic imagery and the black uniforms along with the magically divine glow coming out of Ava’s back, it certainly feels like a more mature magical girl series. Or, at least, one that’s a lot more Goth.

As it should! Warrior Nun was originally an American comic series done in a manga style from Ben Dunn (Ninja High School, Marvel Mangaverse). The original series was known as Warrior Nun Areala and started in 1994.

Now, no one knows how much has translated from the comic over to the live-action Netflix series. In Warrior Nun Areala, the power of former Valkyrie Auria is passed to a new avatar from generation to generation. The comic version of the new avatar is Sister Shannon Masters, who is very different from Ava in the trailer. The comic did have its shares of controversy, but it was popular enough to get a television series.

So if the sheer weirdness of the Warrior Nun trailer has you interested, the series will drop on Netflix July 2. Just in time for the Independence Day binge-watch on Netflix!
