There isn’t a need for 13 Reasons Why season 5 after the series finale

When a show comes to an end, there’s always the question of whether it can wrap up storylines well enough. 13 Reasons Why season 4 did as best as it could with the multiple threads it had running. The ending made it so a fifth season isn’t needed.

The show has always come under fire for some of its storylines. That’s certainly been the case for season 4, especially when it came to Justin Foley’s storyline. However, it’s not the controversy that makes me write that 13 Reasons Why has ended at the right place.

Fortunately, the show was given the warning that season 4 would be the end. Brian Yorkey and his team could put a focus on wrapping up the most important storylines. There are still questions about what’s to come in the future, but I do feel like shows that focus on real life need that. High schoolers don’t have all the answers before they go to college.

13 Reasons Why ending with season 4 was right

Personally, it all comes down to four years just feeling right. Students in the U.S. go through four years of high school. We got four years about high schoolers.

At the end of the show, the cast and crew will move forward with their lives. They’ll go onto other projects. The characters of 13 Reasons Why will head off on their own journeys to their respective colleges.

Shows that involve the college years never tend to get things right. It’s hard to explain why and how everyone goes to the same college without it just being for the sake of the show. 13 Reasons Why didn’t have to try to do that. Instead, everyone was able to go off to some sort of college of choice, although I admit that almost all of them heading off to an Ivy League school didn’t sit very well. It was too much of a “perfect” ending for the students that made it through to graduation.

The ending certainly wasn’t complete. There were a lot of questions after the 13 Reasons Why season 3 finale that weren’t answered during the fourth season. There were threads that weren’t completely tied off. But I do get the sense that it was on purpose. As I said, high school students don’t have all the answers when they go to college. Part of their lives will be unended, and that’s what I get from this ending.

There is a hope of happiness for the future for the characters of 13 Reasons Why. The characters got the closures they needed, even if it was just talking to the ghosts in their heads. Clay understood more about life and death, while Jessica was able to close the chapter of her life off.

Was it perfect? Definitely not. I’m finding every show coming to an end in 2019 and 2020 has had problems with wrapping up the ending. But it was enough to make 13 Reasons Why season 5 unnecessary.

13 Reasons Why is now available to stream in full on Netflix.
