There isn’t going to be a fifth season on 13 Reasons Why

Hands up if you’ve binge-watched 13 Reasons Why season 4 already. There will be many who have, finding out how Clay and his friends’ stories end. But will the story continue with a fifth season?

There’s some bad news for those who want to see the stories continue, to see what happens next. There isn’t going to be a fifth season.

When Netflix renewed the show for a fourth season, it also announced that the fourth season would be the end.

The perfect point to end a high school show

In a way, ending with 13 Reasons Why season 4 is perfect. The show is about high schoolers, who spend four years with the same people every single day. At least, the majority of high schoolers do.

The cast has spent four years together. They’ve grown up together, and in a way, it’s been like high school for many of them—not in the bad way that 13 Reasons Why makes high school look. They’ve had fun, they’ve joked around, and they’ve created bonds that will support them throughout the rest of their careers.

It’s time for the cast to move forward, just like high school students move forward with their lives after four years. While many of the students at Liberty High will head off to college or their apprenticeships, the cast of the series will head off onto new projects and meet new actors, directors, writers, and more. But none of them will ever forget their time on the series (or in the fictional high school).

We also have to admit that shows with the college years don’t tend to work well. The only way 13 Reasons Why season 5 could work well is if there was a time jump, like One Tree Hill and how Riverdale season 5 plans to run.

Certainly, there are questions still to answer. No show can fully wrap things up. Loose threads are left due to lack of time or there’s always that thought of “well, what happens next?” A story is never really over until death. Even then, this show has proven legacies, memories and tapes live on.

So, sadly, 13 Reasons Why season 5 isn’t happening, but there are four strong seasons to watch from the beginning again.
