Avatar: The Last Airbender tops the list of good animated movies and shows on Netflix

It is easy to find family-friendly selections on Netflix, which is excellent since many of you are stuck at home with the kids. To help you find something to watch and stop watching the same movies and shows over and over, we put together a list of five good animated movies and shows to watch on Netflix right now.

Let’s get the list started with a new addition to Netflix, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Currently, the animated series that is No. 1 on Netflix is Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is a series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005-2008.

This is probably geared towards older children and adults, but it’s suitable for all ages. This series follows Aang, a 12-year-old who is the Avatar and sole remaining survivor of his nation, the Air Nomads. Aang, along with his friends, are trying to end the Fire Nation’s war. Aang’s nemesis, Zuko, is a fallen prince of the Fire Nation and is out to redeem himself by capturing Aang.

This has always been a top-rated series, and it’s only going to get more popular. Now, Netflix is working in a live-action remake with the original creators.

The Princess and the Frog

Set in New Orleans during the Jazz Age, The Princess and the Frog follows Tiana, a hard-working waitress who has a dream of opening her own restaurant. She, of course, kisses a frog, who used to be a prince and turns into a frog herself. Then, the two of them embark on a journey to be restored to their human selves.

They run into trouble with the Shadow Man, encounter a bumbling but helpful talking gator, a smart and sassy firefly, and all sorts of antics along the way. It is a fun, feel-good film with strong girl power undertones.

Open Season

With a stacked cast and hilarious jokes, Open Season is fun for the whole family. The cast for this film would make you think it was going to be some major film instead of an animated one.

Martin Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher, Gary Sinise, Debra Messing, Billy Connolly, Jon Favreau, Georgia Engel, Jane Krakowski, Gordon Tootoosis, and Patrick Warburton make up the voice cast in this hilarious film.

The movie follows two unlikely best friends, Boog (Lawrence), a domestic grizzly bear, and Elliot (Kutcher), a one-antlered deer. The two friends, along with their other woodland friends, work together to fight some humans that are hunters. The humor is the perfect meld of jokes for the children as well as jokes the adult can enjoy without harming the innocence of the children.

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius

Next up is another Nickelodeon movie, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. This one can also be enjoyed by the whole family. This film is based on the character Jimmy Neutron, who was the main character in the series The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius that aired on Nickelodeon from 2002-2006.

The film follows Jimmy and his rag-tag group of friends after all the parents of Retroville, the town they live in, have been abducted by aliens. After enjoying a little time with no rules and no parents, the kids realize they want the parents back and set off to find the aliens who took their parents.

It is a fun film with a great soundtrack featuring *NSYNC, The Go-Go’s, The Ramones, Bowling for Soup, and Brittney Spears.

The Willoughbys

Sitting at No. 5 on Netflix’s Top 10 ratings is The Willoughbys. This film premiered on the streaming service in April 2020 and has been well received. It is a story of four siblings whose parents would rather not be bothered in the raising of their children.

It also boasts another all-star cast consisting of Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Ricky Gervais, Terry Crews, Jane Krakowski, and Martin Short.

The children trick their parents into taking a trip that could prove to be dangerous, and they could lose their lives, making the children orphans. This is precisely what the children are hoping for.

Although it may seem a dark notion for an animated film, it never gets too dark and the children do have wonderful people in their lives to make up for the disinterested parents. They have their wonderful nanny Linda (Rudolph) and candymaker Commander Melanoff (Crews) to balance out the lack of affection they children experience.

Gervais plays the family pet, a blue cat, as well as the dry narrator who tells us the tale as we go along. It is a fun movie young and old can enjoy.
