5 most memorable moments from the How to Get Away with Murder series finale.

How to Get Away with Murder ended with a bang. Quite a few bangs, actually.

Somehow, the show wrapped up every major characters’ storyline. Whether it was in a satisfying way or not is up to you. But despite how intense this episode was, some moments stood out more than others. Spoilers ahead!

How to Get Away with Murder series finale top moments: Nate’s testimony

One of the episode’s top WTF moments was when Nate took the stand to testify in Annalise’s court case. Everyone was expecting him to testify against Annalise (including Annalise), but that’s not how things turned out.

Nate not only stated that Annalise wasn’t the one to frame him for Sam’s murder (he blamed Governor Birkhead and the Castillos), but he also tells the courtroom that the FBI offered him 20 million dollars to testify against Annalise and that it was a corrupt FBI agent who murdered Asher. Considering how mad he was at her,  this was quite a turnaround in Annalise’s favor.

How to Get Away with Murder series finale top moments: Connor and Oliver

Connor and Oliver’s relationship was tested once again and in this episode, it looked like it was over for good. When Connor found out Oliver went to the FBI to get him a better deal in return for lying on the stand, Connor was furious.

He was ready to go to prison, ready to pay for everything he’d done, but Oliver wasn’t ready to be without him. He wanted Connor to fight for himself as hard as he was fighting for him.

But it’s wasn’t Oliver going behind Connor’s back that was the biggest shock of this episode, it was Connor asking for a divorce. He hated how their relationship began on a lie and felt like he dragged Oliver down and turned him into something awful. Connor even gives Oliver his wedding ring when he is being taken to jail.

Luckily for all the Coliver fans, in the final moments of the episode, we see that they don’t divorce and that they are together for the rest of their lives

How to Get Away with Murder series finale top moments: Annalise’s closing arguments

Annalise is always at her best in the courtroom and nothing about that changed in the final episode of the series. This was a fight for her life and she pulled out all the stops.

Instead of trying to convince the jury she was infallible, she tells them exactly who she is. She explains that she’s done a lot of bad things, but she’s no murderer. She then describes herself as “ambitious, black, bisexual, fierce, sad, exhausted,” and a bunch of other adjectives and it was so good to see her admit these things out loud in front of a group of people.

Her final statement in the courtroom was emotional, raw, intense, and exactly what was needed in this series finale.

How to Get Away with Murder series finale top moments: Death at the courthouse

It wouldn’t be How to Get Away with Murder without a death, but three in one episode is a lot even for this show. After the verdict was read in Annalise’s trial and she was acquitted of all charges, she talked to the press on the courthouse steps. And things quickly took a surprise turn.

It starts with Bonnie seeing Frank coming up the steps with a look in his eye that has never meant anything good. Before she can stop him, he pulls out a gun and shoots Governor Birkhead. Frank is then shot in the crossfire and falls into Bonnie’s arms.

Annalise runs to help and that’s when she sees it. She looks down at Bonnie and realizes Bonnie has been shot too. Governor Birkhead, Bonnie, and Frank all die on the steps in less than five minutes. The joy from Annalise’s win does not last long, that’s for sure. While Bonnie has had her good and bad moments on the show, it was tough to see her not get some kind of happy ending.

How to Get Away with Murder series finale top moments: The new professor

This season started with Annalise’s funeral and what looked like Wes walking through the crowd, but the writers did a good job of making the audience think one thing when it was something different altogether.

It wasn’t Wes at all who was making his way through the mourners, it was Laurel’s son, Christopher, all grown up. And as it turns out, Annalise’s funeral wasn’t some ploy to get her out of trouble, it was the real thing, only many years in the future.

The people in the crowd were everyone who cared about her during her long life and that included a much older Laurel, Connor, Oliver, and Eve. The scene was also intercut with different moments from the characters’ lives, including Annalise at her mother’s funeral, Nate opening a justice center, and Micheala getting the job of her dreams.

The final moment of the series is back where it all started in season 1: the classroom. Except for this time, Annalise isn’t the professor…Christopher Castillo is. In my opinion, it was the perfect ending to a brilliant show.

Now, we can all binge-watch the series on Netflix and relive ever epic moment all over again.
