Riverdale season 5: Premiere, Netflix release date, cast, trailer and more

Riverdale season 4 comes to an end on Wednesday, May 6, and now the focus shifts to Riverdale season 5!

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riverdale season 4 was cut short by three episodes. Only 19 of the 22 episodes aired, so there is definitely some uncertainty surrounding the series.

Fortunately, Riverdale has already been renewed for season 5 at The CW. This is one of the most popular shows on TV right now, and there’s no way it was going to end after season 4.

Even more fortunately, Riverdale season 4 is coming to Netflix on May 14. The first three seasons are streaming on Netflix right now.

Below, we shared everything we know about Riverdale season 5 so far, including the premiere date, Netflix release date, cast, trailer, and what we expect to happen in the new season.

Riverdale season 5 premiere date on The CW

UPDATE: Riverdale season 5 premieres on The CW in January 2021

Riverdale season 5 was expected to premiere on The CW in October 2020. Usually, new seasons of The CW’s most popular shows premiere during the first two weeks of that month.

The CW officially announced the premiere window for season 5, and it’s scheduled for January 2021.

This year, things are going to a little different for the premiere of the new season of Riverdale. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s unclear when production on season 5 will be allowed to continue. For season 4, production started in July 2019.

It was just announced on Monday, Aug. 17, that pre-production has started in Vancouver. Filming is scheduled to start soon.

So, Riverdale season 5 looks like its on (or even a little ahead) of schedule for that January 2021 premiere.

Riverdale season 5 Netflix release date (UPDATED)

Riverdale season 5 is coming to Netflix, but when the Netflix release date will be depends on when the show premieres.

For those living outside of the US, you can watch new episodes of Riverdale season 5 on Netflix the day after the episode airs on The CW.

For those in the US, things are a little bit trickier. We have to wait to watch Riverdale season 5 on Netflix until after the full season has aired on The CW plus an additional eight days.

With the season 5 premiere date moving to the midseason, the new season is, then, going to air through the spring and summer, rather than the normal fall, winter, spring release. The season should end sometime in July or August 2021, and then it will be added to Netflix about a week later.

One thing we do know: Riverdale season 5 will be added to Netflix US on a Thursday. New episodes always air on Wednesday, and the season is added to Netflix eight days after the season finale airs. That’s always a Thursday.

We just don’t know which Thursday it will be.

As mentioned above, if the season is delayed, it’ll be an even longer wait to see Riverdale season 5 on Netflix.

For now, expect to see the new season on Netflix in July or August 2021.

We’ll update this article with a more accurate release date when we find out more information.

Riverdale season 5 cast

Assuming too many main characters aren’t killed off in the season 4 finale, we should have most of the cast back for season 5.

Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, KJ Apa, Camila Mendes, and Madelaine Petsch will all be back for season 5, surely.

I’m also expecting to see many of the supporting cast in the new season, including Vanessa Morgan, Charles Melton, Madchen Amick, Casey Cott, Mark Consuelos, Molly Ringwald, Jordan Connor, Drew Ray Tanner, Nathalie Boltt, and Wyatt Nash.

Unfortunately, Skeet Ulrich, who plays FP Jones, and Marisol Nichols, who plays Hermione Lodge, will not be back for the new season.

Riverdale season 5 trailer

The trailer for Riverdale season 5 has not been released by The CW yet. Usually, we get to see a sneak peek at the new season during San Diego Comic-Con, which takes place in July.

Unfortunately, SDCC has been canceled this year, so we don’t know when we’ll see the trailer. As soon as production starts and there’s enough footage to cut together a trailer, we’ll get a look at the new season.

What’s going to happen in Riverdale season 5?

Well, that’s the big question. There are so many moving parts with this show, and without a clear resolution in the season 4 finale, we know there are a number of storylines that will need to be wrapped up in Riverdale season 5.

Aside from those storylines from season 4, we also have many of the younger characters moving on to college (or not) and moving on with their lives after high school. It is senior year after all!

It will be interesting to see how the show proceeds from this point. Do we follow the main characters out of Riverdale? Will they actually leave Riverdale? Will we catch back up with them when they all return years in the future?

That’s what Cheat Sheet is reporting. It looks like Riverdale season 5 might jump five years into the future after the kids get back from college. Honestly, that’s the best thing the show could do, in my opinion. Fingers crossed that actually happens!

There are so many things we still don’t know about the new season. Luckily, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is very open and often shares updates about the new season and its direction. I can’t wait to see what Aguirre-Sacasa has to say about the new season following the season finale.

Stay tuned for more information about what’s next!

How many episodes will be in Riverdale season 5?

The CW has not announced the official episode count for Riverdale season 5. At this point, we have to imagine it will be 22 episodes, like the second and third seasons. The fourth season would have been 22 episodes, but it was cut short.

Will we see an extra three episodes in the fifth season to make up for the shorter fourth season? I don’t think so. It’s much easier to wrap up the stories from season 4 and cut out some of the fluff in season 5 than it is to film an additional three episodes of a show like this. They already film 10 months out of the year, basically, so adding additional episodes would really make things tough on the cast and crew.

The fifth season could be less than 22 episodes depending on how things go with the pandemic and when it’s okay to start production again. With everything going on in the world, we likely won’t know how many episodes will be in the new season until they are completed.

For now, expect to see 22 episodes in season 5, and we’ll let you know more about the new season as soon as we find out.
