Stranger Things season 4 will reveal more of Hopper’s backstory

Hopper’s backstory will be revealed in Stranger Things season 4. Production on the new season is currently shut down.

It looks a lot more likely we’ll be learning more about Hopper and his history in Stranger Things season 4.

Stranger Things star David Harbour recently promised a “big, huge reveal about Hopper’s backstory,” according to a report from IndieWire.

Harbour’s comments were made at Liverpool Comic-Con back in March before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down production of Stranger Things season 4 and more.

According to the report, the reveal relates to the boxes labeled “Dad,” “New York,” and “Vietnam” from Hopper’s cabin way back in Stranger Things 2. Of course, we were going to learn about those things at some point. We’ve learned some things about Hopper being a dad, but we don’t know what happened to him Vietnam and in New York, why he moved to Hawkins, and more.

Here’s part of Harbour’s comments about Hopper and his backstory, via IndieWire:

"“I’m so excited about revealing this aspect of the character,” Harbour added. “It’s one of the things that I’ve known since the first frame of the first shot, and we haven’t expressed it yet. And finally we’re gonna express it in a big way. It’s my favorite thing about him that you guys don’t know about him yet, but it has to do with these backstories of New York, Vietnam, and dad. And I’m really excited for you guys to know more about that, and it relates, of course, to things he’s doing with Eleven and Joyce and things like that.”"

Months ago, Michael Ausiello of TV Line reported season 4 would be nine episodes, instead of the previously reported eight episodes. And, one of those nine episodes would focus on the backstory of one of the show’s main characters. We’ve already looked into Eleven’s past, and that only, really, leaves Hopper as the character with the most to reveal.

The tidbit Harbour shared could be about this “origin story,” as mentioned in the TV Line scoop.

Netflix has not confirmed the information about Hopper’s backstory or the additional episode. Until then, we won’t know if it’s true.

I can’t wait to see what Hopper is referring to. There is still so much we don’t know about Hopper, and it’s only fair to give the fans a look into the reasons why Hopper is the way he is and why he’s changed so much over the course of three seasons.

Unfortunately, Hopper is in an interesting predicament. He is alive after the events of season 3, and he’s stuck in a Russian prison camp. How will he get back to Hawkins? That’s what we’ll find out!

Stranger Things season 4 was originally planned to be released in early 2021, according to Harbour. Unfortunately, that release date now seems in doubt with season 4 production delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Production has been on hiatus since March, and they were only a month or so into production before it was shut down. We don’t know when production will begin again, but it’s unclear if and how it will affect the release date or what happens in the new season.
