Even though some of our favorite movies from the past can age poorly in some aspects, there’s nothing more comforting than sneaking into an escape of nostalgia. It’s even better when that nostalgic escape offers hearty laughs. For a generation, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was the ultimate video store choice, the movie you’d rent for weekend movie nights. Given how much we’re looking for a little piece of that ease right now, you can rent (stream) Ace Ventura: Pet Detective from the video store (Netflix) this month, and it’s one of the best new releases.

Jim Carrey stars in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective as the titular Ace Ventura, a quirky private investigator who has the narrow but strangely useful specialization of tracking down missing animals. After the mascot of the Miami Dolphins NFL team ends up stolen, Ace Ventura puts his expertise on the case. Eventually, the Dolphins players themselves begin to disappear, and Dan Marino’s kidnapping puts higher stakes on Ace’s investigation. He works with Dolphins representative Melissa Robinson (Courteney Cox) to catch the culprits in a series of misadventures.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective comes from director Tom Shadyac, who also helmed such movies as The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Patch Adams, Dragonfly and Bruce Almighty. The film wasn’t a critical hit, earning a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but Ace Ventura scared himself up a box office win.

Carrey’s first major starring big-screen role brought in a worldwide gross of over $107 million against a $15 million budget, enough to warrant an equally successful sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, in 1995. Talk of a reboot has been swirling for a few years, but fans can catch the original comedy classic when it arrives on Netflix for streaming at the top of the month.
