It’s Adam Sandler month on Netflix, thought it’s arguably always Adam Sandler month on Netflix because of all the original movies he has streaming on the platform. But fresh off a resurgence of The Waterboy during quarantine thanks to Ariana Grande, her mother and Elizabeth Gillies, two of Sandler’s recent big-screen hits are coming for your watch list. The aforementioned Just Go with It will give you those classic Sandler laughs, while last year’s lauded crime thriller Uncut Gems showcases the comedy legend in serious actor mode. It’s one of May’s top new releases.

Adam Sandler stars in Uncut Gems as Howard Ratner, a jeweler in the Diamond District of New York City with something of a gambling problem. When Howard makes a bet that could see him through a massive windfall, he must get his hands on an expensive gem he purchased in order to make good on his debts. Howard’s balancing act is a precarious one as he juggles business, family and multiple enemies as he pursues a much-needed and life-saving win.

Uncut Gems comes from directors Josh and Benny Safdie, who also directed such films as The Pleasure of Being Robbed, Daddy Longlegs, Heaven Knows What and Good Time. Upon release, the film earned widespread acclaim for Adam Sandler’s performance and holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was also a commercial success, bringing in $50 million against a $19 million budget. Sandler won an Independent Spirit Award for his performance, but was ultimately one of the season’s biggest snubs at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. See what all the Sandler fuss is all about when Uncut Gems hits Netflix on May 26.
