During this weird and scary period of time, some us will naturally resort to the entertainment that feels like comfort food. Sure, some of us will keep watching the dark and challenging shows because they are their own form of escapism, but most are looking back to brighter days or searching forward for a breath of fresh air. Sweet Magnolias, a new romantic drama coming to Netflix, offers that sweet Southern hospitality that we could all use right now. The series should certainly be on your radar and sweet talk its way onto your watch list this May.

Based on the series of Sweet Magnolias novels by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias centers on three lifelong best friends: Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley) and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott). As they live in Serenity, South Carolina, the three best friends try to balance everything from relationships to career to family in their small Southern town. But nothing’s ever as easy as it seems in a small town, especially as Maddie attempts to get her life back on track. The series also stars Christ Klein as Bill, Jamie Lynn Spears as Noreen and Justin Bruening as Cal.

Sweet Magnolias counts author Sherryl Woods as an executive producer alongside Dan Paulson and Sheryl J. Anderson, who serves as showrunner. The book series upon which the Netflix adaptation is based boasts 11 novels, with the first, “Stealing Home,”  seemingly serving as the basis for the first season. However, fans of the books will have to keep a close watch for any plot from the other books sprinkled in. The first season will feature the new standard 10 episodes, a simple binge for the end of a long month of binge-watching. Mark your calendars for May 19.
