Netflix always comes into a new month hot with tons of movies added for streaming. But since the first of month lands on a Friday this May, we’re being spoiled rotten right out the gate. On top of Ryan Murphy’s latest limited series effort Hollywood, we’re getting two brand-new original movie premieres on the first day of the month, including The Half of It and All Day and a Night. All three titles are must-watches with important messaging, but the movie that will get people talking is All Day and a Night. It’s an obvious choice for one of the best new additions.

Ashton Sanders stars in All Day and a Night as Jahkor, a young man with a dream to become a rapper but with ties to a gang, who finds himself behind bars with his father, J.D. (Jeffrey Wright). The son had never wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, and neither did the father, but the father and son wind up in prison together. It was an inevitably they were both wishing against but aren’t surprised to see come true. While Jahkor and J.D. spend time together as inmates, Jahkor opens himself up to self-discovery as he explores her circumstances and hopes for his own son to break the cycle.

All Day and a Night comes from writer and director Joe Robert Cole, who also co-wrote the billion-dollar blockbuster Black Panther and earned an Emmy nomination for writing on The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. There’s no doubt that the writing and acting come together with the urgent storytelling to create a moving, thought-provoking film that will inspire conversation. Be one of the first people to watch All Day and a Night when the movie makes its world premiere on Netflix at the top of May.
