1. Evil Genius: The True Story Of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist
In 2003, Brian Wells went out on a pizza delivery to a remote location. Shortly after, he was on television for robbing a bank with a bomb collar strapped around his neck. Wells died, on camera, while begging police to get the bomb squad. (The bomb detonated and killed Wells moments before the bomb squad arrived.) The case that follows involves a bizarre scavenger hunt, a motive that remains unclear, and leaves you questioning Wells’s involvement in the case.
As director Trey Borzillieri dives deeper into this four-part docuseries, he finds himself led into the bizarre web of Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, who reportedly masterminded the heist. Diehl-Armstrong has her own crimes associated with her, including asking her ex, Bill Rothstein, to hide a body of her boyfriend in his freezer. And he does it! That’s just a detail to gauge the level of weird going on in Evil Genius.
The Wells case has fascinated true crime lovers for years. It’s one of the most bizarre ever full of twists and turns that not even the investigators could see coming. In the end, you’re just left with more questions than answers surrounding just how this group of people got here.
Evil Genius is full of fascinating yet disturbing dynamics between the players involved, like Tiger King. There’s just so many shocking moments that you’ll be left with your jaw open and hooked within the first ten minutes. Fair warning, it’s a little disturbing because the video of Wells is played in the documentary.
