Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler, will begin streaming on Netflix in May.

The dark crime drama, Uncut Gems starring Adam Sandler, is coming to Netflix on May 25.

The film follows Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a New York City jeweler and gambling addict who is always looking for the next big thing. Written and directed by the Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, the film also stars Kevin Garnett, Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, and Eric Bogosian.

The film takes place in 2012 during the Philadelphia 76ers’ playoff series against the Boston Celtics. In the film, Ratner meets Garnett, an NBA player for the Boston Celtics, and he becomes a bit obsessed with the player. Going so far as to make bets based around Garnett against the advice of many of his colleagues.

Garnett, who in real life, is a hugely successful former NBA player, played himself in the film and did a bang-up job with his performance. There were other NBA players considered for the part, and the Safdie brothers had to put aside their New York-Boston rivalry and cast a former Boston Celtic player.

Julia Fox, in her acting debut, wowed the film industry with her first performance. She played Ratner’s girlfriend and did such a fantastic job for her first acting role that she received a nomination for Breakthrough Actor Award at the 2019 Gotham Awards.

Actress Idina Menzel plays Ratner’s estranged wife, Dinah, and this role is a far cry from her portrayal of Elsa in Frozen or her Broadway performance in Wicked. She is ruthless and fierce in this role. She adds an emotional element to the relationship with Sandler’s Ratner.

The trailer shows us the fast-paced life of Ratner and that he finds himself deep into the gambling world. We also see that his family is in the middle of the mess he has created and makes us wonder how he will make out in the situations he finds himself in. It is agreed that this is the best performance of Sandler’s acting career. He does a fantastic job of portraying the person with a gambling addiction while trying to balance his personal life.

On another note, A24 studios are hosting online auctions of some of their film memorabilia. The auction includes pieces from Uncut Gems.

Rolling Stone reports:

"Meanwhile, the May 4 sale will feature Uncut Gems memorabilia, such as Kevin Garnett’s jersey, the famous Furby chain and Idina Menzel’s bat mitzvah dress, with proceeds going to the Queens Community House."
