Hulu has brought its finale of Little Fires Everywhere season 1. Want Little Fires Everywhere season 2? There’s some bad news.

There’s some bad news for Little Fires Everywhere fans. It’s unlikely that Little Fires Everywhere season 2 will happen.

When the show premiered, Hulu billed it as a miniseries. That told many to only expect one season. Based on the book storyline, many fans expected a clear beginning, middle, and end. A miniseries made sense.

Now we have the season finale, and it’s hard not to feel a little shortchanged. The ending certainly isn’t the one the book offered, leaving us with many questions about the fates of various characters. The most important one we need to know about is Izzy.

Of course, being a miniseries hasn’t stopped shows from bringing second seasons in the past. Reese Witherspoon’s Big Little Lies was initially a limited series but ended up landing a second season. The storyline was there and HBO jumped at it.

However, Bustle points out that showrunner Liz Tigelaar doesn’t plan on there being more story to tell. She says that she always saw this as a “one and done” season. There are no plans for her to return to continue the story, even if Hulu wants it. The question then is whether Hulu opts to get another showrunner in or chooses to keep it as just a miniseries as originally planned.

There isn’t a followup to the books, either. That doesn’t stop someone from crafted new material—13 Reasons Why did it—but there are questions of whether you need to create new material. It feels like Little Fires Everywhere season 2 is needed, but do we really want to mess too much when Celeste Ng hasn’t crafted a second book? She’s open to doing a new book, but she says that everything about Elena Richardson and Mia Warren are in the first book. Is there material for a second?

We’ve watched other shows deviate from books with plenty of source material already. Outlander routinely deviates and ends up in a mess sometimes. Pretty Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries deviated massively to create something that wasn’t event recognizable from the source material. Game of Thrones has attempted to continue storylines without the source material, and well, we know how that ended!

Unless there is a well crafted and thought-out storyline, a little like Big Little Lies season 2, and a showrunner who wants to do it, I doubt Little Fires Everywhere season 2 will happen.
