The Mandalorian season 3 is reported to be in the early stages of pre-production at Disney Plus.

While the future of many shows remains uncertain, things are looking up for fans of The Mandalorian. Although Disney Plus has not yet officially confirmed plans for The Mandalorian season 3, Variety is reporting that a third season of the breakout Star Wars drama is already in the early stages of development.

According to the report, series creator Jon Favreau has been actively writing material for The Mandalorian season 3. Meanwhile, the show’s art department has been hard at work creating early concepts for the show’s third season.

As Variety reports, production on The Mandalorian season 3 is said to have begun recently due in large part to the “huge lead time” required to produce the series.

This is far from uncommon for shows which feature large-scale special effects and strive to maintain a high-quality final product. Take for example fellow space drama The Orville, which also requires a longer window of production due to its equally high standards for visual effect.

Putting a third season into early development should help Disney maintain its ability to release new seasons on a yearly rotation, thus preventing extended breaks between new seasons of the show.

Although Disney has not formally announced viewing figures for The Mandalorian‘s debut season, it’s easily been the streaming service’s most-talked-about original series thus far — rivaled only by the buzz surrounding Disney Plus’ Marvel series in development — so it’s not surprising to learn a third season is already in the early stages of development.

The show has also proved successful in appealing to a wide audience and introducing the Star Wars fandom to a new audience, thanks largely to the breakout appeal of The Child/Baby Yoda.

When will The Mandalorian season 3 come to Disney Plus?

At this point, it’s too early to predict just when the third season of The Mandalorian might premiere on Disney Plus; however, pending any major delays, it seems highly likely season three of the Star Wars drama will drop in the fall of 2021.

Season 1 premiered in Nov. of 2019, while season 2 is expected to premiere in Oct. 2020. Should this trend continue with season 3, it seems like an October or November premiere date could be in the cards for season 3 as well.

The Mandalorian season 1 is currently streaming on Disney Plus, while season 2 is expected to debut sometime in late 2020.
