Love Wedding Repeat: Netflix rom-com engaged in alternate endings
Love Wedding Repeat is a new Netflix rom-com filled with wedding drama. The two story-line plot makes it feel a bit off.
Love Wedding Repeat is a new Netflix romantic comedy starring Sam Claflin and Eleanor Tomlinson as brother and sister. It’s Hayley’s (Tomlinson) wedding day and her brother Jack (Claflin) wants her wedding to be as perfect as possible. But like every rom-com, a series of unfortunate events happen back to back.
Spoilers below the trailer for Love Wedding Repeat.
Jack isn’t very lucky in love. He doesn’t seize many moments, which caused him not to express his feelings for his sister’s friend, Dina (Olivia Munn), a few years ago. Dina is a war journalist and it was unlikely Jack would bump into her again any time soon. But they met up again at the wedding and even shared the same table.
Hayley is the opposite of her brother. She is marrying the man she loves and wants to spend her life with him. But during the reception, her ex-boyfriend, Marc (Jack Farthing), decides he wants to crash her special day. Instead of spending time with Dina, Jack has to keep an eye on Marc, so he doesn’t mess everything up.
Hayley’s idea of stopping Marc’s shenanigans is by slipping him a sedative in his drink. The plan seemed foolproof until some playful children decided to move the name tags around on the table. The wrong person drank the sedative and Marc can go about his normal business just fine. But the story takes a strange turn when the narrator rewinds the story and shows another version where Jack drank the sedative instead.
All the events change, and the actual ending happens with this version.
People often regret the paths they don’t take in life. Many stories like Groundhog Day and Russian Doll explore plots where the characters have a do-over.
Love Wedding Repeat is a do-over story with two different versions of the same wedding. It’s also a story about how love can succeed or fail purely because of chance.
The ending is somewhat unsatisfying for a rom-com. The first ending is arbitrary, which makes the second ending equally arbitrary. This isn’t a sugar-coated love story, and instead, it feels like the end is entirely random.
Love Wedding Repeat isn’t the best romantic comedy out there, but you’ll find some enjoyment watching this movie if you like a wedding-themed film with a tiny hint of comedy.
The cast is very charming, and everyone’s dressed to the nines. But there isn’t much character development and the jokes are a bit off.
Love Wedding Repeat may be a much-needed lighthearted movie for some people, but other than that, it’s not a very memorable movie.
