The Matrix (1999)
Before the turn of the century, the Wachowskis came along and completely revolutionized the way that action movies were made. The visuals that appear in this movie are so mind-blowing and incredible that it’s impossible to come away from it and not be completely stunned.
The Matrix is one of the most iconic movies ever made because of how it changed the action genre and was able to be a heady movie at the same time. You can still hear people make reference to living in the Matrix in normal conversations.
Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus immediately became pop culture icons and the red pill versus the blue pill debate became a meme, as well as an iconic cinematic image. There’s a lot of value in something immediately becoming part of the collective consciousness just due to the fact that it was able to make that much of an impact right off the bat.
Out of all of the movies on this list, this is probably the one that had the largest impact on culture and on cinema in general. It is for good reason, too. Not only is it a great movie with an awesome story and iconic characters, but it is also a landmark cinematic achievement.
