The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

“Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

What else is there to say about The Shawshank Redemption, other than its a perfect movie and a masterpiece. This movie succeeds at its one main thematic mission – to bring hope to an unfair world where it seems all hope is lost. It believes in the fundamental goodness of people and our proclivity to have the backs of people who shouldn’t deserve it.

We’re living in a time where hope seems low. But Shawshank shows that there is always the possibility for good. It may take time, and it may take lots and lots of patience, but it is out there. We just have to wait and it will come.

This is one of the most rewatchable movies of all time and that makes it score highly on my personal criteria for a movie. It has characters that you want to love and root for as soon as they come on-screen, and it gives you the payoff you want to get for rooting for them.

I’ve watched this movie more times than I can count and most of those viewings were when it would come on cable. I don’t have cable anymore, but I do have Netflix. The Shawshank Redemption is the perfect movie to stream because you can turn it on and lose yourself in the story in a way that you can’t in most other movies. There’s a reason it is the number one movie on IMDb.

This movie is mesmerizing, engaging, and most of all hopeful. It’s the perfect movie to watch at a time like now.
