Have you ever watched a supposedly scary movie and found yourself not getting scared even once? Like, not even one jump scare got you and none of the creepy moments made you so much as wince? That’s kind of the deal with 2011’s psychological thriller The Roommate, which isn’t so much as a thriller as it is thrilling to see Leighton Meester lead a movie. She deserved better than this, but she knocked a role in a subpar movie out of the park. The Roommate isn’t the best new release coming to Netflix this month, but it’s definitely one of them.
Inspired by the 1992 film Single White Female, Leighton Meester stars in The Roommate as Rebecca, the college roommate of fashion design student Sara (Minka Kelly). Rebecca happens to look a lot like Sara, and the pair grow closer over time. However, when Sara starts to make more friends outside of their duo, Rebecca becomes secretly jealous and lashes out at those who dare to steal Sara’s time. After Sara moves out with her boyfriend Stephen (Cam Gigandet), Rebecca’s behavior unleashes its fully violent and unhinged potential, no matter the cost.
Upon release, The Roommate was ravaged by critics, scraping by with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 4%, denoting widespread negative reception. For a horror film, The Roommate lacks the chills and thrills you want, but the one redeeming quality the movie has going for it is Leighton Meester’s performance. Still, the movie was a modest box office hit, bringing in $52.5 million worldwide against its $16 million production budget. If you’re looking for something to pass the time, do Leighton Meester a solid and add The Roommate to your watch list on April Fool’s Day.
