Now that Robert Downey Jr.’s tenure as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been officially retired with Endgame, the star’s talents have been re-opened to other films and franchises. It’s to be seen if his latest effort, Dolittle, will result in a sequel, his 2009 performance as Sherlock Holmes remains the gift that keeps on giving. Downey reprised his role in the 2011 sequel and will return again as Holmes on the big screen, but first, it’s time to rewatch Sherlock Holmes and unlock his various mysteries when the film streams this month on Netflix.

Based on the character of the same name by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr. as the titular sleuth everybody knows by name. The film follows the detective in 1890 London as he and his crime-solving partner Dr. Watson (Jude Law) unravel the mystery of a string of murders. Once they identify the killer as Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), they soon discover the devotee of the dark arts has much grander and darker plans. Holmes and Watson become locked in a game with Blackwood as they unearth his world of the occult and the strange.

Sherlock Holmes was directed by Guy Ritchie, who also helmed such films as Snatch, Swept Away, Revolver, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Aladdin and The Gentlemen. Upon release, the film earned positive reception from critics, holding a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, and won Robert Downey Jr. a Golden Globe for his performance. Also, Sherlock Holmes proved a box office hit, making $524 million worldwide and spawning a 2011 sequel. Another sequel has been tentatively scheduled for December 2021, so make sure to dive back into the original this April on Netflix.
