You might know Ricky Gervais as the creator of the original British version of The Office that inspired your favorite show, or you might know him as the slightly mean guy that sometimes hosts the Golden Globes with a beer and a smarmy grin. It’s also possible that you know him from some other show or movie. But what we all know is that Ricky Gervais is funny and can make us laugh. He’s looking to do just that with the new season of his Netflix original series After Life, which returns this month as one of the best new release titles.

Ricky Gervais stars in After Life as Tony Johnson, the head of a local newspaper whose world turns completely on its axis when his wife dies of breast cancer. In his state of grief, Tony falls into depression and contemplates suicide, but he resolves to say and do whatever he wants as a means to punish the world for his wife’s untimely passing. However, he finds the world trying to change him for the better. In the second season, Tony tries to become a better friend to those around him, since they’re also going through hard times. Not to mention, his paper is on the brink of shutting down, further complicating Tony’s life.

After Life comes from creator Ricky Gervais, who also created such television series as The Office (U.K.), Extras and Derek. Gervais also wrote and directed the six episodes of the first season, which first premiered on Netflix last March. The series received positive reviews from critics upon its release, holding a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The six episodes of season 2 were also written and directed by Gervais. If you haven’t yet had a chance to watch After Life, be sure to catch up with the first season before checking out the new episodes when they debut on April 24.
