Do you love Black-ish and its spin-offs? Do you miss Parks and Recreation and Angie Tribeca star Rashida Jones making you laugh? Well, does Netflix have a brand-new comedy series for you. #blackAF gives viewers the best of both worlds, as Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and the erstwhile Ann Perkins team up for a hilarious new family sitcom. No doubts about it, #blackAF ranks among the best new titles coming to Netflix this month, and it’s time to get excited.
Kenya Barris stars in #blackAF as a fictionalized version of himself, while Rashida Jones plays his wife, Joya. Together, Kenya and Joya have six children, who they raise with inspiration from Barris’ own irreverent and honest approach to parenting. The series also explores themes of relationships, race and culture through a new kind of lens for a family sitcom. Netflix promises that #blackAF “flips the script” on what we have come to expect from a sitcom and pulls back the curtain on the messy, humorous truth of a new money black family trying to get it right.
#blackAF comes from creator Kenya Barris, who also created the hit ABC family sitcom Black-ish, as well as its two spin-offs Grown-ish and Mixed-ish. Barris makes his television acting debut, though he’s been a writer for shows like The Game and Soul Food, and also developed America’s Next Top Model. The sitcom marks the first series under Barris’ overall deal with Netflix, the latest television producer to bring their talents to the streamer. Considering we could use some laughs, you don’t want to miss the first season of #blackAF when it drops on April 17.
