It’s no secret that Matthew McConaughey has had some iconic on-screen team-ups. Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fool’s Gold. Jennifer Garner in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Dallas Buyers Club. Anne Hathaway in Interstellar and Serenity.

But one of his best on-screen team-ups with a talented and beloved actress came in 2012 with the indie drama Mud. McConaughey shared the screen, in limited scenes, with Reese Witherspoon, and they delivered two of their best performances. The film ranks as one of April’s best Netflix new releases.

Matthew McConaughey stars in Mud as the title character. When Mud encounters Arkansas pre-teens Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) while the pair explore the Mississippi River, the fugitive asks the kids for their help. Because of an indiscretion that went down in Texas, Mud has bounty hunters hot on his trail. But he asks Ellis and Neckbone for help with reuniting with Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), the love of his life. Through a complex coming-of-age story mixed with thrilling action, Mud tells a thought-provoking story about friendship and growing up.

Mud comes from director Jeff Nichols, who also directed such movies as Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Midnight Special and Loving. Upon release, the film earned near-perfect reviews from critics, as evidenced by its equally near-perfect rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it missed the major award ceremonies, Mud managed to perform well at the box office with worldwide returns of $32.6 million against a $10 million budget. It’s one of McConaughey and Witherspoon’s most underrated films, and it’s a must-watch on Netflix this April.
