While everyone’s staying home, more and more Netflix binge-watchers will be diving into documentaries rather than feeling guilty for mindlessly watching 100+ episodes of their favorite show for the third time. (Well, no shame in that game, either.) There’s plenty of documentaries at the ready on Netflix, and more will be arriving this April (more than we even have room for in a ranking of 25 top new release titles). But Circus of Books should definitely take up a spot on your watch list this month.

Circus of Books centers on the Los Angeles-based gay porn shop Circus of Books, which offered the LGBTQ+ community a safe space to gather and be themselves for over 35 years. However, many of the store’s customers were unaware that the shop was run and cultivated by Karen and Barry Mason, a religious heterosexual couple with three children, who were in the dark about their parents’ store. They kept their business private, even through the HIV/AIDS epidemic, during which they continued to employ and cater to the LGBTQ+ community… until the internet provided competition.

For the first time, Karen and Barry Mason’s daughter Rachel asks her parents the hard questions about how the most unlikely couple became a major distributor of gay porn and where Karen’s negative reaction to her own son’s coming out came from. Circus of Books arrives as the debut documentary from artist Rachel Mason and, as previously mentioned, receives an executive producer credit from writer and producer Ryan Murphy. The documentary will be an important conversation starter when it makes its premiere on Netflix on April 22.
