It’s not often that a black and white, part-silent film can debut at the modern box office and become a worldwide blockbuster. In fact, it’s extraordinarily infrequent to the point that it happened just about once in 2011. Coming up on its 10th anniversary next year, The Artist brings its prestigious cinema to Netflix this month. Think of it as something for the high brow among us low brow fans who will be spending the month watching the B movies and reality shows.

Taking place in the 1920s, the storied golden age of Hollywood, The Artist follows George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), a massive silent movie star who has accrued an adoring public of fans. However, George finds his life and career enduring new complications when he meets rising star Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) and finds himself in a moral dilemma of not wanting to cheat on his wife. Still, George and Peppy continue to fall for each other as sound becomes the hottest new feature in film, which leaves George’s career on the decline and Peppy’s on the steady rise.

The Artist received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon release, as reflected by its stellar 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s major buzz took it all the way to the Academy Awards, where it was nominated for 10 awards and won five, including Best Director, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and Best Picture. Thanks to making it on every top 10 list, The Artist raked in a worldwide box office gross of $133.4 million against its comparatively modest budget of $15 million. Don’t miss one of the all-time modern greats when The Artist hits Netflix on April 25.
