Watch the trailer for #blackAF starring Kenya Barris and Rashida Jones! The new Netflix original series premieres on April 17!
Netflix released the trailer for its new sitcom series #blackAF, which hails from black-ish creator Kenya Barris. The series is inspired by Barris’ own unorthodox approach to life and parenting, seeking to “flip the script” on sitcoms, according to a report from Deadline.
Barris left black-ish, which has proven to be a franchise ABC with spin-offs such as grown-ish and mixed-ish, a couple years ago. The series creator signed an overall deal with Netflix with #blackAF being the first project to come out of that deal. Barris also will be making his acting debut in #blackAF, where he will play a fictionalized version of himself.
In the trailer for #blackAF, the focus goes from a more traditional single-cam sitcom ala black-ish to a mockumentary style in the vein of Modern Family or Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Though the great twist to that formula is that Barris’ onscreen daughter is the one making the documentary about her family. It’s a smart move and definitely sets the show apart.

The synopsis of #BlackAF reads, via Netflix:
"“Loosely inspired by Barris’ irreverent, highly flawed, unbelievably honest approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture, #blackAF flips the script on what we’ve come to expect a family comedy series to be. Pulling back the curtain, #blackAF uncovers the messy, unfiltered and often hilarious world of what it means to be a “new money” black family trying to get it right in a modern world where “right” is no longer a fixed concept.”"
#blackAF also stars Rashida Jones (Parks & Recreation) as Barris’ onscreen wife Joya with their children played by Genneya Walton (Extant), Iman Benson (Suits), Scarlet Spencer (Bright), Justin Claiborne (Reverie), Ravi Cabot-Conyers (The Resident) and Richard Gardenhire Jr.
The trailer for the series definitely promises some great laughs. One of the best moments of the trailer is when Barris is on a video conference with other black creators such as Issa Rae, Will Packer, Ava DuVernay, Lena Waithe, and Tim Story. Story just rips into black-ish saying, “black-ish seems to tap into the hearts and minds of 55-year-old white women.”
#blackAF is set to drop on Netflix on April 17.
