The Netflix original series Messiah starring Wil Traval, Michelle Monaghan, Mehdi Dehbi, and more has been canceled after one season.

Messiah, the new Netflix original series, will not return for season 2.

According to a report from Deadline, Netflix has canceled the original series after one season. Messiah star Wil Traval announced the news on Instagram this week.

Messiah premiered on Netflix on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1, 2020). The series tells the story of a man, who claims to be the “Messiah,” and the government agents who investigate his claims.

It was one of the most-watched Netflix shows of the year. We thought there was a good chance we’d see a season 2 renewal from Netflix, initially. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

We shared Traval’s Instagram post announcing the cancellation news below.

We hate to share news like this with fans, especially when a show ends the way that the first season of Messiah did. It’s hard when shows get canceled because it means fans are disappointed and those who work for the show are left without a job.

It’s not that surprising Messiah is not coming back for season 2. While the show was popular on Netflix when it premiered, it seemed like the buzz died down rather quickly, too quickly. Netflix usually monitors viewership and other analytics for at least 30 days after the premiere. Unfortunately, the series probably didn’t meet the threshold the streaming network uses to determine if a show should be renewed or not.

Along with that, Netflix has been canceling shows after one season a little more often than the network used to. In the past, it was almost a guarantee that all Netflix shows would be renewed for season 2. Now, it’s more difficult, and we’ve seen a few good shows canceled after one season, including Daybreak, Tuca & Bertie, and more.

Overall, most Netflix shows are renewed for season 2. There’s been a select few, more recently, that will not be returning for another season. Obviously, that’s a shame for fans of the series.
