7. Marvel’s Space War
Marvel Comics story: Annihilation
Annihilus is usually a villain reserved for the Fantastic Four. That was until Annihilation. He became more than just the Thing’s punching bag. He starts a war throughout the galaxy that may have caused the deaths of billions. That includes all of the Nova Corps except Richard Rider. He watched helplessly as the entire crops were destroyed. Annihilus’ reign of terror included capturing Galactus and the Silver Surfer with the help of Thanos. It also leads to strange team-ups like Richard Rider, a beaten-down Peter Quill, and Kl’rt the Super Skrull.
As much as this is known for its action, Annihilation did an amazing job showing what war looks like. There are more death and destruction than we’ll ever see. It also changes people. Thanos would never take orders from anyone. Let alone Annihilus.
We saw a Peter Quill who wasn’t the sarcastic ball of happiness that we’ve gotten used to. Then there’s Richard Rider. He had to adapt to a life of war. He couldn’t hold back during a fight or it could lead to the deaths of the soldiers he was leading. In the end, it was Rider who killed Annihilus in a very brutal way.
Everyone loves intergalactic wars. Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy are perfect examples. The difference with this series is it’s violent in a way that we haven’t seen. If you thought the last two Avengers movies were bad, you haven’t seen anything yet.
