If fantasy isn’t your go-to genre, but you still enjoy a riveting series with just the perfect splash of fantasy and a side of trippy, Maniac is your dish! The Netflix original miniseries stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, a duo that is more dynamic on-screen than you may have ever imagined.
Maniac centers on Annie (Stone) and Owen (Hill), two complete strangers who decide to volunteer themselves as test subjects in a pharmaceutical study. These studies are often not harmful, but this one is different. In fact, this one is really out there. With so many risks and so much sketchiness surrounding this study, why do Annie and Owen have no issue with it?
Annie and Owen feel as if they have nothing to lose. They each have gone through rough times are not in a good place at the moment, so they figured, why not risk it all? Another huge motivator for the duo (and other participants in attendance) is that this “drug” promises to cure them.
There isn’t anything physically wrong with either, but mentally they believe there is. This medication can supposedly repair anything from a mental illness to something as simple as low self-esteem.
For her performance, Stone received a lot of praise. We all know the actress is effortlessly able to fill in any shoes, be it the role of the girl next door or an action star. Hill also surprises audiences with a fun act. The cast is rounded out by Billy Magnussen, Sally Field and Sonoya Mizuno.
